Healthy Dog Treats
The first thing you’ll want to do is invest in one a cute bone shaped cookie cutter. It will pay for itself in no time with all the adorable, healthy and low-cost treats you’ll be making for your furry friend.
Don’t have time to bake? No worry, a frozen treat on the porch in the summertime will have your pooch begging for more. Homemade dog treats are fun to make, and judging from Rovers reaction, they’re fun to eat too!
Here are a few of our super easy favorites.
Pupsicles
An ice cube tray is your ticket to this summertime dog treat. If your dog’s tail gets wagging over a plain ice cube, wait until you see him flip over other yummy frozen flavors. Add a raspberry or strawberry center to the ice cube. For an even healthier choice, try a broccoli floret or a spoonful of peas.
If your hound prefers meat over veggies, hide the peas in frozen beef broth. Have fun experimenting and keep your pup guessing.
For a frozen yogurt treat you may like to try: 1 tablespoon of honey, 3 tablespoons of peanut butter and a ripe banana mixed with 16 ounces of plain yogurt. Blend well and freeze. See if you don’t get a slobbery doggie kiss of gratitude.
Biscuits
The recipes in this category are endless with plenty of room to customize to suit Fido’s taste buds. Since these are homemade, you’re able to manipulate the thickness and choose the size of the cookie cutter. It’s easy to make one batch of biscuits that works for your large dogs and another for small dogs if you must. For a basic recipe with plenty of opportunities for flavor tweaking, we recommend:
2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup oats, ⅓ cup peanut butter, and 1 1/14 cups hot water. Mix in the order listed, roll out and cookie-cutter then bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
He’ll be sitting by the oven drooling!
Chewies
One large sweet potato can be an excellent veggie alternative to rawhides. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees and line your baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut a large sweet potato into lengthwise thin strips. Bake for three hours; flip them half way through cooking. After cooking completely, you should have a soft chewy treat. If Fido likes it crunchy simply add another 20-30 minutes onto the baking time.
No Bake (but just as yummy)
Don’t want to wait three hours, but you have three ingredients? Then we’ve got the treat for you!
Combine ½ cup of milk and 1 cup peanut butter, then mash in 3 cups of rolled oats. Roll into balls and refrigerate for an hour, then enjoy! These will stay fresh in your refrigerator for three weeks and even longer in the freezer.
The key to delicious dog treats is making them with love and your furry friend’s preferences at heart. If he loves coconut and apples, then go ahead and add those ingredients, or substitute with these where you can. While it is easy to pass our dogs scraps from the table, whenever possible it’s nice to create a tasty morsel that is all their own. In fact, you may be tempted to beg them to share with you for a change.
