5 Things You Must Have in Your Kitchen

Kitchen appliances are sexy. There’s no doubt about it. It’s easy to look through the catalogues or online and see devices and gizmos that we must have. But rather than get yourself into debt, it’s important to build up the essentials – the appliances and accessories you’ll continually use rather than the ones that’ll sit locked away and rarely used. Here are five to look out for…

A Decent Blender or Food Processor

A blender at least, won’t cost you must. A food processor is a slightly bigger investment. Either way this will serve you well in the future. There’s so much you can do with a food processor from making soups for lunch to blending hummus for dips and snacks – you’ll get a lot of mileage from this one for sure.

Kitchen Scales

If cooking is an art, baking is a science and in order to make science work, you need a decent way of measuring everything. A good pair of kitchen scales will mean you can bake just about anything which will come in handy particularly for starters and desserts.

Pots and Pans

Having decent pots and pans in the kitchen is a worthwhile investment. You don’t need loads, but one or two decent cast-iron saucepans, frying pans and skillets will not only last a lifetime, they’ll get a lifetime of use as well. A wok will also come in handy, as everybody who’s ever been a student will know.

Spice Rack

Spices are essential for cooking. There’s no need to go overboard and throw everything into one dish, but if you’re trying to cook most dishes, particularly Asian food, you’re going to need a few spices to hand. A good spice rack will have plenty of space for all of these and should make it easy for you to see what you have to hand.

Slow Cooker

A slow cooker allows you to cook amazingly tasty and tender meals with very little effort on your part. Simply chuck everything into the crock pot and leave to stew and cook for several hours (usually anywhere from 4-12). Stews, curries, jerk chicken – just about everything can be cooked in the slow cooker, and what would often taste like a pretty average dish tastes wonderful due to the way it has been cook. Slow cookers are also ideal for those who work long hours and want to come home to a nice home cooked and warm meal.
